Mum on an Island's Alternative Easter Directory

As a teacher, it is in my nature to make lists. I love lists, in fact. I was devising a list for myself of things perhaps I could take tot (and baby!) to over Easter, when I thought I may as well pour my efforts into making it a blog post directory that might be of a bit of use to others too...we'll see...bit of a trial...

I know there are a few of these Isle of Wight directories kicking about but I've added some additional waffle to mine in Mum on an Island style, giving an 'alternative' spin on what I reckon adults could get up to at these events too...because, after all, Easter is for everyone!!

I've just jotted a few notes about each event, then included the links if you want the finer details of course.

Enjoy Easter =)

Arreton Barns Easter Egg Hunt, 16th April

The advert says the small people could:

Do an Easter Egg Hunt

Have their little faces painted

Paint an egg

I say the adults could: Make a purposeful detour to The Dairyman's Daughter for a drink. Ideally of the alcoholic variety (you've spent the day with kids, after all.) They also do a pretty scrummy sharing platter we can recommend called The Poacher's Board if you stay for grub!

Tapnell Egg Hunt, Easter weekend & holidays

The advert says the small people could:

Do an adventure egg trail (over Easter weekend)

Feed cute baby lambs

Decorate biscuits

See birds of prey with Haven Falconry

I say the adults could

Play a game of spot the child with the most expensive piece of clothing on. No joke- last time we went we saw a toddler in a waistcoat and another very small child sporting all Jasper Conran. Tapnell is the more upmarket of kids play areas, isn't it? And that's another reason why we all love it: we all love feeling a bit more upmarket at times huh?! When we go to Tapnell, it's the only time I find myself choosing pressé as a drink. On a more serious note... you can 'drink up' some absolutely awesome views up at Tapnell!

The Needles, Easter hols

The advert says the small people could:

See plenty of children's entertainers on

Check out lots of local musicians

I say the adults could: stock up on sweets in the sweet shop and do some secret sugar eating when the little ones are glued to Randini. They say too much sugar is bad for you...but I'm pretty sure that parents in half term must vitally up their RDA for short term energy purposes.

Bebbecino, April 13th

The advert says the small people could:

(Quick! Tomorrow as I write this!) There's the chance of heading out on an enchanted fairy walk in magical Mottistone!

Picnic lunch

Story time in the woods

I say the adults could: embrace your inner fairy! I don't really know how that looks...but...think happy thoughts! Spread your wings and fly, fly, fly!

(P.S. Random thought... Anyone a 90s child and remember the days of roll-on glitter?? Fairies make me think of this... roll-on glitter to all the school discos. #90schild.)

Arty Shakes, 16th April

The advert says the small people could:

Meet the Easter bunny for a chocolate egg

Paint an egg cup

Spot the eggs round the shop

Guess the number of sweets competition

I say the adults could: slurp up a milkshake. You deserve it. Kids get all the milk.

I pinched the details from:

Robin Hill, the hols and Easter weekend

The advert says the small people could:

Join in with the Mad Easter Egg dash (16th & 17th)

Meet and greet birds of prey (16th & 17th)

Do an Easter quest (rest of the hols)

I say the adults could: reminisce the Bestival. And wonder how they did make it up that Hill after a heavy weekend...

I pinched the details fromRobin Hill Easter

Blackgang Chine

The advert says the small people could

Join in with the opening of the new Underwater Kingdom

Go in search of (presumably pretend) crabs for the opening's competition

There's also a Fairy Fling- you can meet some fairies! We really are lucky on the Isle of Wight to have so many fairies around!

I say the adults could: Play innuendo bingo amongst yourselves about going on a 'crab hunt.' Tee hee. On a serious note, I'd also suggest staying late enough in the area that you try and catch a sunset- Blackgang (as I expect you know) has some pretty dramatic views around it. It'll make for an impressive #nofilter pic ;) .... Beautiful Isle.

I pinched the details from:

So, there's my list. If you know of anything else to add, feel free to pop me a line. These are just some of my thoughts for things I liked the look of and places we enjoy! X
