'Tea Time!'

A Review of Themed Cream Tea

The Essex, Godshill, Isle of Wight

With my sister's birthday approaching, I wanted to find a treat! Now, my sister is heavily pregnant so I knew I was after something that entailed edible items with a lashing of luxury and fun.

The Essex in Godshill popped up on my Price is Wight emails so I took a gander! Firstly, Godshill is gorgeous, and secondly, The Essex fits the bill for somewhere a bit more 'upmarket.' Thirdly- there was an offer on their themed cream teas!

Alice in Wonderland was the theme we chose and I don't want to give too many spoilers away and ruin the 'magic'  in case you go, but the table decorations were quirky and fun. There was even a mini mad hatter hat- so we could get into the spirit of things with some selfies (of course!)

The tea itself continued the theme with little labels such as 'eat me' adding to the details. In terms of what we ate, the finger sandwiches were neatly presented and, with one side brown bread and one side white, they suited either preference for sharing. The scones were freshly and warmly delivered- I think these were the most delicious of the treats , but then I am partial to clotted cream and jam filling my tum! On the top tier were a seletion of mini desserts and chocolates. As well as being rich in flavour, these little treats were lovely to look at: colourful; delicate; and intriguing!

Call us crazy, but my Mum, sister and I aren't big on tea drinking, so instead we opted for different hot drinks all of which arrived in individual teapots. The vintage style china cups and saucers that accompanied our 'tea' added to the traditional and quaint aesthetic delivered to the table.

From a parent perspective, I was also pleased to find a good changing table in the toilets and that there was enough space to tuck the pram next to our table.

It was a really comfortable, leisurely afternoon. Plus, we got to pootle around the village afterwards! Overall, I'd recommend it to others because- in the words of the Mad Hatter- "it's always tea time!"
